R/C experience: Been around since 1933, and into modeling maybe even longer?
My good friend Jack Moody and I were the first model
R/C helicopter flyers in the state of Oregon, way back
in 1972. My wife quit counting the number I crashed, and I
hate to even hazard a guess the number of airplanes I`ve
used up.
As for autogyros, I actually started with an autogyro kite
when I was only 11 or 12 years old. My first R/C autogyro
was a wingless direct control one that was the combined effort
of myself and two friends. I tested it while riding in the
back of a pickup truck, with Jerry Holcomb running the controls,
while I held it up in the air. I managed to destroy one while
using that method of testing.
My friend Vern Ahlberg designed a 3 bladed flapping head
for me and I installed it on what was probably a version of
the Ugly Stick. Having left/right rotor head tilt, along with
normal rudder & elevator, it flew very well, and even John Gorham
(American RC Heli`s) expressed an interest, and requested a few
demonstration flights. I`ve flown a Whopper for many years,
and have recently built about 4 wingless direct control autogyros.
