Upper Mid West Autogyro Research TrialS (UMWARTS)

July 11-13, 1996

Fellow gyroNUT Bill Friedlander hosted this three day event near his home in Hudson, Wisconsin. Gyromodelers from Wisconsin, Washington, Indiana, Missouri, Florida and Arizona enjoyed wonderful mid-west hospitality while flying at two different fields just east of Minneapolis, MN.

UMWARTS GROUP
Some of the participants in UMWARTS. From left to right: Bill Friedlander, Rick Anderson, Don Pietenpol, Steve Tillson, Jim Manoli, Jim Baxter. Not shown are: Leon Wolf, and Carl Huizenga.

Day one flying was conducted at the Sod Busters field, and culminated with one of Bill`s famous (fantastic!) "BEAN-HOLE-BEANS" feast, enjoyed by all the GyroNUTS along with possibly one hundred fellow Sod Busters club members.

Day two`s activities were held at the 3M R/C Flyers field, a beautiful facility featured recently in a model magazine.

A few of the gyros at the UMWARTS flightline. Whistler, Gyrace and one of Jim Baxter's "creations".

Day three flying was a return to the Sod Buster`s field, where beautiful weather accomodated the flying activities.

Initial Planning began at this time for a possible fly in at the National AMA site, Muncie, IN sometime in 1998 and for an International fly in in Madrid, Spain, where we will join Emilio Cabezas and Charles Chalet (from Antony, France) in September 1997.
